Africa, the mother land: Egypt. La fine di un'avventura. The end of an adventure

Come ci si sente alla fine di un’avventura? Domanda spigolosa.

Male.

Primo perché hai vissuto esperienze meravigliose di cui il tuo cuore è colmo, e secondo perché hai conosciuto persone meravigliose, di cui senti la mancanza.

Già qualche giorno prima di partire sentivo questa sofferenza crescermi dentro, va beh anche perché ho vissuto per 3 mesi in mezzo al nulla del deserto, Sahara Orientale, a 150 metri da uno dei mari tropicali più ricchi di biodiversità al mondo, uno spettacolo continuo di colori e forme di vita, con una scoperta sorprendente ogni giorno. Ho nuotato con delfini e tartarughe, potuto ammirare il dugongo, ammirando atolli di reef corallini e formazioni madreporiche multistratificate “ah ecco! Siamo precisi per favore, non sia mai che proviamo a parlare come esseri umani normali, eh?” “stai buono…” svolgendo uno dei progetti più interessanti mai presentati in questo ambito e sviluppando moltissime applicazioni, superando i miei limiti personali e imparando moltissimo, sia in acqua che fuori da questa. Ho letto, studiato, imparato, mi sono confrontato con colleghi biologi che ho incontrato per puro caso, ho insegnato e fatto divulgazione, mi sono commosso, di fronte a spettacoli naturali, tranquilli, non sono un tipo “romantico”, insomma ho vissuto. Alla grande anche!

Fisicamente mi è rimasto un colorito parecchio abbronzato, i capelli più biondi e più lunghi ed una decisa insofferenza a portare le scarpe. In effetti la mia vita si svolgeva a piedi nudi, o al massimo in infradito, pantaloncini e maglietta, in qualche caso con giacca a vento e pile, era sempre inverno, non dimentichiamoci che quando il vento soffia forte da Nord, può essere decisamente fastidioso e freddo.

Ma direi che non ci si può certo lamentare.

Quel che mi è rimasto dentro, invece, è più complesso da descrivere. Una profonda gratitudine ed un rispetto verso le persone che mi hanno accolto e consentito di svolgere questo progetto. Inutile citarle, lo sanno già. Si vive 24 ore su 24, 7 giorni su 7 a strettissimo contatto, senza praticamente vie di uscita, quindi si vivono i rapporti in maniera molto più intensa e spesso anche difficile, ma comunque molto vera. Capita che si scoprono aspetti di sé che non si conoscevano, potremmo chiamarla una prova caratteriale, che possono anche stupire. Nervosismi e preoccupazioni si amplificano in taluni casi, per poi risolversi velocemente e scopri che sei diventato molto più calmo e tranquillo di quello che ti immaginavi, non che io sia esattamente uno agitato “No? Ma smettila, dai non ci crede nessuno!” o almeno lo sono stato parecchio in passato, ora non più. Mi sono scoperto interessante ed interessato, ho esplorato molte cose, conosciuto tante persone, vissuto situazioni ed emozioni incredibili. Come la mia prima immersione, una figata pazzesca (termine tecnico del mondo subacqueo peraltro), lo snorkeling di notte, le immersioni notturne e la mia solita capacità di trovare animali e forme di vita interessanti avendo comunque molto meno esperienza dei miei colleghi, ho subito il fascino della presenza di uccelli migratori intorno a noi, dalla più piccola forma di vita come il plancton, al gioco che i delfini (Tursiopi) hanno fatto con noi per 30 mimuti circa. Potrei elencarvele tutte ma la cosa più affascinante è il lavoro che si svolge su di sé sott’acqua: il controllo che si esercita sul respiro ti fa progredire nella tua scala evolutiva personale, affronti situazioni ed imprevisti che impari a gestire, difficoltà e pericoli che sai risolvere.

E’ una meraviglia.

Se guardo comunque al percorso che ho svolto da un anno a questa parte devo essere sinceramente stupito ed orgoglioso, ho proseguito su quello che un “amico di scrittura” (http://www.wanderingwil.com/) potrebbe definire tranquillamente “La strada giusta”, la mia strada, seguendo le mie inclinazioni ed aspirazioni, senza raccontarmi bugie, ma agendo giorno per giorno per quello che voglio e sto riuscendo a fare. Non è che sia semplice, come semplice non lo è stato finora, ma le difficoltà nell’impostazione iniziale e gli ostacoli che ho affrontato finora e che ancora mi attendono, non mi sono pesati più di tanto. Sono passato da un training piuttosto duro e complicato sulla teoria e pratica per diventare guida di Safari in Namibia, ho avuto l’occasione poi di lavorare in quel paese per affinare le competenze acquisite e fare esperienza, sono tornato in Italia e ho stabilito il mio progetto di vita, ho costituito questo blog, ho fotografato e montato video, ho cercato e trovato un altro progetto a cui tengo moltissimo e che ho appena concluso nella sua prima fase, e ora?

Ora si riparte per una nuova avventura, senza drammi, senza problemi, con l’entusiasmo e la voglia, con il bagaglio di vita che si fa più pesante e con la sensazione che coloro che ho incontrato me li porto dietro sempre con me, almeno nel pensiero. Prossima destinazione: Tanzania, Ruaha National Park, una delle zone più wild dell’intero paese, fuori dai circuiti più classici dei safari, con una natura incontaminata ed entusiasmante che non vedo l’ora di esplorare. Pronto a mettermi alla prova, ancora una volta (Poche idee, ma ben confuse, pensieri e riflessioni a casaccio: IL CAMBIAMENTO é EVOLUZIONE) e vedere cosa riesco a combinare.

Ci resterò per un po’.

E voi? cosa aspettate a venire a trovarmi? Ci vedremo nella savana tra un alba mozzafiato a cercare elefanti, leoni, leopardi oppure su una spiaggia corallina pronti ad entrare in acqua e scoprire un universo totalmente nuovo, magari facendo immersione con gli squali?

How do you feel at the end of an adventure? Edgy Question.

Bad mood.

First of all because your heart is full of wonderful experiences that you have lived, and second because you have met wonderful people, and you miss them.

Few days before I left I felt this mood rising up in me, ok maybe because I lived for three months in the middle of nowhere in the desert, Eastern Sahara, 150 meters from one of the richest in biodiversity tropical seas in the world, a continuous show of colors and forms of life, with surprising discoveries every day. I swam with dolphins and turtles, I saw the dugong, I admired coral reefs and multilayered coral formations " Be precise please, do not ever try to talk like normal human beings, eh? "" Be quiet… " carrying out one of the most exciting project ever presented in this area and developing a variety of applications, beyond my personal limits, learning a lot of things, both in water and out of it. I read, studied, learned, I was confronted with fellow biologists I've met quite by accident, I trained and spread my knowledge, I was emotioned, in front of natural spectacles, for sure I'm not a romantic person, in short, I lived. On top!

Physically, I’m more tanned, blonder and I have a big intolerance to wear shoes. In fact my life was in bare feet, or at most in flip-flops, shorts and T - shirt, sometimes with windbreaker and fleece, it was winter, do not forget that when the wind blows strongly from the north, it can be downright annoying cold. But I would say that I cannot certainly complain anything.

What’s changed inside me, however, it’s more difficult to describe. I feel a deep gratitude and respect to the people who welcomed me and allowed to carry out this project. Needless to mention them, they know it already. We lived 24 on 24 hours, 7 on 7 days in close contact, practically without a way out, then we lived relationships in a much more intense way and sometimes difficult ones, but still very real. It happens that you discover things about yourselves that you did’nt know, we could call it a “personality test”, that may also surprise you. Jitters and concerns are amplified in certain cases, and then resolved quickly and you can discover that you are much more calm and peaceful than you imagined, not that I am exactly one can be called turbulent "you? Shut up! nobody believes in!" Ok at least I have been pretty turbulent in the past, not now. I found myself interesting and interested, I explored many things, I met many people, I experienced incredible situations and emotions. For example my first dive, a crazy cool (technical term of the underwater world, however), snorkeling at night, night dives and my usual ability to find interesting animals and life forms even if I have less experience then my colleagues, I’ve been amazed by the presence of migratory birds around us, by the smallest form of life as plankton, by the game that dolphins (bottlenose dolphins) have done with us for about 30 mimutes. I could list them all but the most fascinating one is the work that you take place upon yourself under water: the breath control gives you progressions in your personal evolution, you face unexpected situations and you learn to manage them, difficulties and dangers that you know how to solve.

It 's amazing

If I look however at the path that I have done during this last year I have to be truly amazed and proud of me, I went on what a "friend of writing" (http://www.wanderingwil.com) could easily define "the right way", my way, following my inclinations and aspirations, without telling myself lies, but acting day by day for what I want and I'm managing to do. It's not so simple, as it has not been easy so far, but the difficulties at the begnning and the obstacles that I have faced so far and that still await me, I have not felt them so loud. I went from a training pretty hard with difficult theory and practice to become Safari guide in Namibia, I had the opportunity to work in that country to hone the skills acquired and make experience, I returned to Italy and have set my life plan, I made this blog, I photographed and edited pictures and videos, I searched and found another project that I care a lot and I just ended in its first phase, and now?

Now I leave for a new adventure, without drama, without problems, with the enthusiasm and desire, with life experience that becomes larger and with the feeling that I will carry with me the people I met, at least in thoughts. Next destination: Tanzania, Ruaha National Park, one of the most wild of the entire country, off the beaten track classic safaris, with beautiful nature and exciting environments that I can not wait to explore. Ready to prove myself once again (Poche idee, ma ben confuse, pensieri e riflessioni a casaccio: IL CAMBIAMENTO é EVOLUZIONE) and see what I can arrange.

I'll stay for a while.

And you? what are you waiting to come to join me? I'll see you in the bush between a breathtaking sunrise searching for elephants, lions, leopards or on a coral reef ready to jump into the water and discover a whole new universe, perhaps making a shark dive?

Africa, the mother land: Egypt. Mr Dugongo

“Hey man, how was the excursion?” “good, but no Andrea, no Dugong, it’s seems you are Mr. Dugongo”

I ragazzi mi prendono in giro così.

In effetti la cosa è strana, la prima escursione che ho fatto quando sono arrivato in Egitto era proprio per l’avvistamento del Dugongo, uno dei mammiferi marini più interessanti e minacciati. E proprio in quell’occasione l’abbiamo avvistato, poi anche tutte le altre volte è andata così, e devo dire di ritenermi fortunato. Non è molto comune avvistarlo e con gli animali selvatici liberi una buona dose di fortuna non fa male.

In primis perché il progetto che sto seguendo (IL PRIVILEGIO DI LAVORARE IN CIABATTE) presso il TGI DIVING MARSA ALAM mi sta offrendo l’opportunità di vivere in mezzo alla natura in continuo, di vedere posti incredibili e di fare scoperte e avventure sempre nuove e ricche di emozione. E per questo devo ringraziare la persona che ha ideato il progetto e che lo segue direttamente, una che non esito a definire una gran donna, con un bel caratterino ma che ci vede lungo e fa le cose come bisogna farle: facendole. Alessandra Sicilia.

Io e Ale ci siamo conosciuti in Italia, durante un corso di formazione e ci siamo capiti al volo, io non so stare fermo a far niente neanche se mi obbligano, ho una fame di scoprire e di conoscere che mi divora e lei ha una forte personalità e un sacco d’esperienza nel mondo del diving. Perciò abbiamo cominciato a legare immediatamente.

Praticamente un’associazione a delinquere, anche perché se decidiamo una cosa, non ci piove che non la facciamo. Lei e suo marito Lollo sono delle persone meravigliose, e hanno negli occhi quella scintilla che ti comunica “hey mi hai guardato bene bene in faccia? Non sono mica un pischellino di primo pelo!” e pure loro non ce la fanno mica a stare fermi. Perciò capite che quando Alessandra mi ha chiamato e mi ha proposto di mettere insieme il progetto e di partire, potevo forse dire di no? Sarei stato un’imbecille e tra i 1000 difetti che ho, questo non lo sono di certo.

Date a Cesare quel che è di Cesare, e direi che il merito va tutto a lei, peraltro se lo merita.

Ma torniamo al nostro amico Dugongo.

Il dugongo è un mammifero marino, ma è l’unico cetaceo erbivoro. “Scusa non è che potresti spiegarti meglio? Come al solito non si capisce niente…”, “adesso ci arriviamo”.

Appartiene all’ordine dei Sirenidi, la parola deriva proprio dalle sirene perché in epoca antica era stato confuso esse. Non a caso infatti possiede delle caratteristiche particolari: una lunga coda con pinna caudale bilobata che muove lentamente, ma molto efficiente, due pinne pettorali che vengono usate soprattutto per ancorarsi al suolo, poi vedremo perché, più che per muoversi e la posizione delle ghiandole mammarie decisamente inconsueta, il alto sul petto, cosicché da assomigliare proprio ad un seno femminile.

Et Voilà la leggenda è fatta.

Ma non è l’unico mammifero che possiede un “seno” nella stessa posizione che abbiamo noi esseri umani, peraltro in comune a tutti primati, e sapete quali sono gli altri due? Ve lo dico io, l’Elefante e la Procavia. Inaspettato vero? In realtà sono strettamente correlate da un punto di vista evolutivo, hanno cioè un progenitore comune, non molto lontano, terrestre e di piccole dimensioni, che poi grazie alle pressioni evolutive si è “differenziato” in diversi animali, i cetacei, gli elefanti e le simpatiche procavie che hanno in comune diverse qualità, tra cui il modo di emettere suoni nello spazio chiamato ecolocazione e alcuni modi di comunicazione.

Ma il nostro Mr. Dugongo è unico nel suo genere, infatti mentre tutti gli altri cetacei, sia che si tratti di delfini (odontoceti) piuttosto che balene (misticeti) sono strettamente carnivori, lui è erbivoro.
Si nutre di una pianta marina che cresce soltanto in alcune baie (Marsa in arabo) in diverse parti del mondo, soprattutto in Mar Rosso. “piano, piano…piante marine? Vorrai dire alghe!” “no, no voglio dire proprio piante” si tratta di fanerogame marine che hanno un sistema radicale di ancoraggio al suolo, un fusto, delle foglie e fanno fiori emettendo polline, avendo una riproduzione sessuale proprio come le piante terrestri, ce n’è una anche nel mediterraneo si chiama Posidonia, ne avete mai sentito parlare?

Il nostro amico Dugongo divide il pasto con le tartarughe verdi in queste praterie marine dove scava dei sentierini a raggiera, molto simili a quelli che si trovano in savana che chiamiamo “game tracks”, le “dugongo tracks”, brucando con una certa fame questa tenera erbetta. E ne deve mangiare parecchia! Lui può arrivare tranquillamente fino a 4 m per 400 kg ed è un gigante tranquillo e rilassato senza particolari nemici naturali. A parte l’uomo ovviamente. È un mammifero e quindi dipende dall’aria che respira in superficie e ogni 8 minuti circa deve tornare in superficie per prendere una boccata d’aria, e lo fa senza troppe preoccupazioni.

Nonostante non sia assolutamente pericoloso per l’uomo e per niente aggressivo, bisogna comunque avere un certo codice di comportamento quando si avvicina un esemplare. Primo, non toccarlo (altrimenti vi stacco le mani) secondo non stargli troppo vicino e non troppo addosso, lui sta sul fondo e voi in superficie a fare snorkeling, ma direi che affollare troppo l’area non è cosa consigliabile potremmo disturbarlo e quindi, non volendo, scacciarlo da casa sua. Oltretutto personalmente ho una regola, che viene rispettata anche dai miei colleghi del diving, dopo circa un quarto d’ora di osservazione si ritorna a riva e si cerca di far capire agli ospiti, che sono fortunati ad aver avuto l’opportunità di vedere un animale in via d’estinzione, e che può essere sufficiente così, non credete? È molto meglio non disturbare troppo un animale, in modo da avere l’opportunità di rivederlo in un’altra occasione piuttosto che scacciarlo. Possiamo godere della natura in maniera diversa, più etica e a scopo conservazionistico, in modo migliore.

Indeed, the strange thing is, the first hike I did when I arrived in Egypt was just for the sighting of the Dugong, one of the most interesting and threatened marine mammals. And on that occasion we spotted, then also all the other times it went well, and I must say I feel lucky. It’s not very common to spot him and with wild animals free a good amount of luck doesn’t hurt

Primarily because the project I'm following (THE PRIVILEGE TO WORK IN FLIP FLOPS) at TGI DIVING MARSA ALAM is giving me the opportunity to live in nature continuously, to see amazing places and to make discoveries and adventures are always new and full of emotion. And for this I have to thank the person who conceived the project and that follows directly, one I don’t hesitate to call her a great woman with a temper but she looks far away and things to be done are done: Alessandra Sicilia.

Me and Ale we met in Italy, during a training course, and we understand each other immediately, I can not sit still and do nothing even if you force me, I have a hunger to discover and to know that consumes me and she has a strong personality and a lot of experience in the world of diving. So we started to bond immediately. Practically a criminal crew, because if we decide one thing, there's no doubt that we do not do it. She and her husband Lollo are wonderful people, and they have that spark in their eyes that tells you "hey I have a good look at my face? I'm not a nerd! "And they are not able to stand still. So understand that when Alexandra called me and asked me to put together the project and leaving, I could possibly say no? I would have been stupid, and between 1000 flaws that I have, for sure stupid I’m not.

Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and I would say that the credit goes to her, however, she deserves it.

But back to our friend Dugong.

The dugong is a marine mammal, but it’s the only cetacean herbivore. "I'm sorry can you explain? As usual do not understand anything ... "" Now we get there. "

It belongs to the Sirenia order, the word derives from the mermaids because in ancient times it has been confused with them. Not by chance that owns the particular characteristics: a long tail with bilobate tail fin that moves slowly, but very efficient, two pectoral fins which are mainly used for anchoring to the ground, then we will see why, rather than to move and the position of the mammary glands very unusual, the upper chest, so as to resemble their own to a female breast.

But it’s not the only mammal that has a "breast" in the same position with human beings, however, common to all primates, and you know what are the other two? I tell you, the Elephant and the Hyrax. Unexpected true? Actually they are closely related to an evolutionary point of view, that is, they have a common ancestor, not very far, land based and small, who then thanks to evolutionary pressures was "differentiated" in different animals, whales, elephants and nice hyrax that share several qualities, including how to make sounds in space called echolocation and some ways of communication. But our Mr. Dugong is unique, in fact, while all other cetaceans, whether it be of dolphins (toothed whales) rather than whales (baleen whales) are strictly carnivores, it’s herbivorous. It feeds on a marine plant that grows only in some bays (Marsa in Arabic) in different parts of the world, especially in the Red Sea.

seagrasses that have a root system to anchor to the ground, a stem, leaves and flowers are emitting pollen, having a sexual reproduction just like land plants, there is one in the Mediterranean also called Posidonia, have you ever heard about? Our friend Dugong divides the meal with green sea turtles in these seagrass prairies where it digs little pathways radially, very similar to those found in the bush that we call "game tracks", the "dugong tracks", grazing with a certain hunger this tender grass. And it needs to eat a lot! It can easily grow up to 4 m per 400 kg and is a calm and relaxed giant and without natural enemies. A part of the man of course.

It’s a mammal and therefore depends on the surface and from the air to breathe every 8 minutes it must return to the surface to take a breath of air, and does so without too many worries.

Although not absolutely dangerous to humans and not at all aggressive, you really have to have a certain code of behavior when approaching a specimen.

Besides, I personally have a rule, which is respected by my colleagues of the diving center, after about fifteen minutes of observation we come back to land trying to make it clear to the guests, we are lucky to have had the opportunity to see an endangered animal, and that may it’s enough, don’t you think?

It’s better not to disturb an animal, so you have the opportunity to see it again another time rather than drive it out. We can enjoy nature in a different way, more ethical and conservation oriented, in the best way.
